Artist Statement
Working and studying in Sydney and then on the Mid North Coast allowed for many creative influences and work experiences which were to shape and inspire a dedicated arts career. In 1997 Elizabeth established her own Private Art School with students regularly exhibiting and consistently winning awards. Elizabeth has project managed five collaborative mural public art projects and is currently a full time teacher at North Coast TAFE Art & Design School, Great Lakes Campus.
Achievements include Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievements in Fine Arts, the winning of numerous prizes in local exhibitions and being published by Berkelo Booksellers Sydney and by TAFE NSW North Coast Institute of TAFE, Port Macquarie.
The Fishermen Series explores the natural light and reflected patterns formed within the Great Lakes and Oceans. Maritime markers and the life beneath the surface have been of great interest. The seduction of colour, material, texture, form sounds and smell have stimulated me to pursue my representations of this subject.
These led me to research and explore the fishing culture and leisure activity on the East Coast of Australia. Comparisons were made from the 1970′s until now. Early in this period fish were abundant and caught readily, and the prize catch photographed in the spirit of competition.
Today this contrasts with the declining numbers of fish caught and available. The issues central to this are overfishing, commercialisation, pollution and of the need for education and marine parks.
We live in an age where everything can become an object of desire; the beauty of this environment encourages boating, fishing and consumption for this is modern hunting and gathering.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Art from Newcastle University.
