I am vocalist/percussionist for seven peice East Coast funk and groove band The Ninth Chapter. I am one of the founding members and helped start the band in 2007. I play Conga, Djembe, Bongos and a few other party tricks I have in my bag. Most of the band members grew up in North East NSW and we feel our music represents the lifestyle we have all grow accustomed to.
I am inspired and influenced by many genres and styles of music, but from a percussion point of view I enjoy learning from percussionists that bring their talent to more mainstream music rather than the traditional styles. I like watching and listening to Raul Rekow (Santana), Sola Akingbola (Jamiroquai) and Cyril Neville (The Meters). They get me thinking and I can relate some of their rhythms and sounds to the type of music The Ninth Chapter plays.
Vocally I try to bring a little from my favourite artists like Skunkhour, Beck and The Black Seeds while lyrically keeping it local.
Recently, after 5 years of heavy gigging and recording, the band has joined the festival circuit performing alongside acts such as Tower of Power, Jon Cleary, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Booker T, Electric Empire and Blue King Brown to name a few. Most recently The Ninth Chapter has taken up the offer of providing the “New Years Countdown” slot at the world renowned Woodford Folk Festival as well as selling out several shows at Sydney’s renowned Club 505.
