Artist and tutor in basketry, chair caning, textiles, leather, silver, weaving, paper medias, (mixed media)

Helen is a creative basket maker / fibre sculpture (some of you will remember her as Helen Stedman). She has lived on the Mid North Coast for 15 years, but has worked with cane & other fibres for over 30 years.

She trained as a handcraft teacher and basket maker, has written for many publications, and supplied props for movie sets and the Australian Fashion Awards.

In 2002, she was a finalist in the NSW TAFE Design Awards,

Helen’s work was published in The Australian Textile Fibre Forum Magazine in 2002 and 2004 and she tutored at the Orange Forum in 2005.

A sponsorship by the Society of Arts and Crafts of NSW in 2002 led to Helen writing an instruction book on the Art of Hand Caning Chairs, a skill which she teaches regularly.

In 2005, she was awarded a Regional Arts Grant for personal and community development in the field of basketry techniques.

She has been a tutor at Camp Creative for the last 2 years and will return with a new class in 2006.

Helen works with all manner of materials, developing many of her own styles, and enjoys both exhibiting and conducting workshops throughout Australia and overseas,

  • Qualified Handcraft Teacher (forerunner to Diversional Therapy Certificate).
  • Certificate 1V Design Fundamentals.
  • Various basic computer courses.
  • Train Small Groups Certificate
