Margaret Stockdale lives on a farm in the Krambach area and began her artistic endeavours in 1994. She is mostly self-taught, completing a part time TAFE course in 1998.
Having won her first art contest aged 7, Margaret has gone on to win over 40 art awards since 1995, (excluding online awards). Some of these awards include the Margaret Smith Memorial Art Award, Gosford, twice, the Northern Daily Leader Art Award, Tamworth, the Central Coast Area Health Art Prize, and numerous other Fine Art awards. More recently, she has been awarded prizes at local shows, including Champion Art Exhibit at Wingham and Gloucester Shows.
“Having tried various media, I now concentrate mostly on oil painting, and some graphite pencil drawing. I enjoy the expressive quality of oil paint, and love the tonal strength that can be achieved with graphite.
I have painted many different subjects over the years, including landscapes, waterscapes, still life and portraits, human and animal. My main focus now is definitely figurative, with oil paintings of horses and cattle dominating my current works.
For many years I have been struggling with a debilitating illness. This has limited my output of works, and has made it very difficult for me to promote my art and to enjoy being a part of the wider local arts community. The Internet has been an enormous help in this regard and has allowed me to submit my work to the online arts community. I have won literally dozens of art awards using this media, including many overseas, which has given me much joy and helped me to stay motivated.
I recently received the Fine Art America Tony Award for artistic merit. Only two Australians have received this award. This was a tremendous and exciting moment for me. Art is wonderful therapy for all, but especially for those of us with disabilities, a real blessing.
I have had one solo exhibition at the Gloucester Gallery and I have another pending.
I also have a small gallery at home and visitors are always welcome to come and browse.
I hope you enjoy my work.”
