For as long as I can remember I have been drawing and painting all that has inspired me. As a small child I felt the need to express myself through the visual medium.
As a teen I became adept at sketching using many weights of pencil in order to best portray my subject, real or imaginary. It was only three years ago that I first started to experiment with paint other than watercolour. I quickly found that my sketch books took second place to easel and canvas.
I have shown my work in two solo exhibitions. One in Newcastle and one in my old home town in the Blue Mountains, Katoomba. The café in Newcastle was the now defunct Salar Couch café and Katoomba my work was featured in the cosy Parakeet cafe at the bottom of Katoomba st. Also I have entered several art competitions where my work was displayed- The artisan prize at John Miller Galleries Newcastle and At the Mattara Festival 2005.
Primarily I now work with acrylic paints, a medium I find to be expressive and vibrant. Many of my works begin as detailed sketches, focussing on insignificant details of life. The curve of a shoulder, the stem of a flower, things which capture my attention usually will build a painting almost of there own accord.
A recent development for me is an incursion into the world of abstract painting.
My first abstract; Summer under the Mulberry tree, started as a hot lazy afternoon with vague thoughts of a painting of berries. The finished work to me sums up a lazy afternoon siting under a shady tree with no pressing business to attend.
Which really is what I feel is the essence of art- escape from our current fast paced world; nothing is in hurry in my works. It is a moment to stop and recapture that breathing space, step into that calmer place of youth.
