My background is in contemporary visual art and design, over time moving across various mediums – glass, paint, basketry, papier mache, and finally returning to the craft of stitch, first learnt as a child at my mothers knee. These many years later it has become my passion, and I have spent the last six years exploring textiles and stitch, fusing together contemporary, traditional and ethnic techniques, as an alternative medium for my images.
My images draw on the past and the present, across cultures, visual and spiritual experiences and thoughts. Through my pieces I endeavour to capture thintense sense of place one experiences when standing in solitude and silence in the vast expanse of the Australian outback, the landscape engulfing you, other pieces take on a more personal statement, raising questions concerning the social, environmental and political pathways we as a nation are taking.
I use predominantly natural fibres (silk and cotton) as my base fabrics, hand dyeing and painting the blank cloth to create a background on which to work.
The cloth is then enriched with extensive hand stitching, traditional and expressive, (often using hand dyed threads) to create an image with texture, movement, subtle changes in colour and indiscreet areas of detail for the eye to pause and investigate.
PERSONAL HISTORY
I worked for many years in office administration before completing TAFE NSW courses in Art Foundation and Design Fundamentals and have completed the first year of a Diploma in Visual Arts. I have been working as a professional artist since 1996, first with works on paper, and since 1999 in the field of textiles.
My knowledge of hand-worked textiles has been gleaned from workshops with Australian and International Textile Artists and extensive personal research into ethnic embroidery techniques. My work in this field has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions throughout NSW and juried exhibitions interstate.
My work is heldin private collections in Australia, the US and Europe. I am a member of the Fibre Artist Network (Mid-North Coast), NAVA and The Ozquilt Network. In addition to my personal work Pamela is also involved in tutoring with community groups throughout NSW.
