Coffs Harbour City Council's Cultural Advisory Committees Workshops

Coffs Harbour City Council is undertaking a review of its cultural advisory committees structure and has held workshops with members of the local community and other relevant parties.
A third public meeting will be held at Council Chambers Cnr Coff & Castle Streets Coffs Harbour on Monday 11 February 2008 at 5.30pm. This session is for Council to convey to the community outcomes from previous workshops and web comments.

Visual Arts and Crafts Survey - Open to all arts and Crafts practitioners - This survey is still ongoing.We would like to thank all those that have already filled out this questionaire and encourage all those that have not to do so.
We need to gather information to provide an accurate picture of the Mid North Coast visual arts and crafts community and to find out what artists need. With over 700 visual artists and associated businesses on our database it is impossible to conduct face-to-face interviews with everyone. A questionnaire will give us a snap shot of the sector and help us tailor the project to your needs. The questionnaire is available for download from

Coffs Harbour City Council invites individuals, groups, organisations and firms to register to be included in a proposed internet-based 'Coffs Harbour Creative Industries Directory'.
The directory will be located on Council's website, and will be accessible to those working in the Creative Industries as well as the general public.Eligible to register are visual, literary and performing artists and the support industries assisting them in these fields. Support industries include hire, supply and maintenance, specializing professionals, industry educators, venues, including galleries and theatres, and much more.

MID NORTH COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER - Applications close 29th February 2008. No late applications will be considered. - The Mid North Coast Regional Council for Social Development is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to manage staff and operations across the area.
We are seeking a person with tertiary qualifications in Social Science or equivalent, extensive experience in a range of community service and community development activities, possessing a high level of communication, planning, staff supervision, submission and policy writing skills, knowledge of IT systems, and experience in advocating at a high level for social justice issues.
The position is currently based in Macksville and requires regional and state travel. The initial performance based contract will be for 35 hours pw at SACS (NSW) Award Grade 6. A remuneration package in the range of $60,000 will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Inaugural Lower North Coast Photographic Art Prize - Monday, 7 January 2008 to Wednesday, 30 April 2008 - Entries close late April

2008 WATERMARK LITERARY FELLOWSHIP - Application close 31 March 2008 - The Watermark Literary Society is offering a residency for an emerging Australian writer of natural history, nature and place.
The Fellowship includes: - single/double accommodation in the Camden Haven, on the mid north coast of New South Wales, for a 6 week period during June and July 2008; - assistance with travel; - a living allowance; - mentorship by Martin Harrison, a widely published poet and critic who directs the program in Writing and Cultural Studies at University of Technology, Sydney.

2008 Coffs Harbour Lillipilli Art & Craft Exhibition - Entries for the Coffs Harbour Lillipilli Art & Craft Exhibition close on Friday, February 29 and are available by phoning Woolgoolga Art Gallery on 02 6654 1054 or by emailing bbloor@iprimus.com.au
The biggest exhibition of its kind for the year between Sydney and Brisbane, the Lillipilli will display around 400 all new works of art and craft from 9am to 4.30pm daily, The exhibition will be mounted at the Norm Jordan Pavilion in the Coffs Harbour Showgrounds, right on the Pacific Highway in the heart of the city. The exhibition is organised and run by the Woolgoolga Art Group (WAG), which is a volunteer group formed way back in 1972, and which has its own working gallery in Turon Parade, Woolgoolga.

A weekend, residential workshop for Mid North Coast writers Falls Forest Retreat 1 & 2 March 2008, Participants checking in during the afternoon of Friday 29 February.
The tutor for the retreat will be Claire Scobie. After studying history at Cambridge, she worked for the Telegraph Magazine for three years and won the Catherine Pakenham Award as Best Young Journalist of the year.
The weekend program will be fully catered (2 x dinners, 2 x breakfasts, 2 x lunches, morning and afternoon teas). The writing workshops will be conducted from 10.00am - 4.00 pm on Saturday and will recommence Sunday morning and continue until lunchtime with departure Sunday afternoon.
Sleeping arrangements vary and include dormitory style accommodation. Cost per person is $143.00 all-inclusive. EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST YOUTH CHORAL & EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC - Vacancies will occur in 2008 for qualified musicians to work within the Hastings Youth Choir group. In this organisation there exists three youth choirs aimed at developing choral and vocal skills in a nurturing environment leading to performances of a high standard. This is a weekly commitment during NSWDSE school terms in Port Macquarie.

KENDALL NATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION 2008 DATES ANNOUNCED!
Jonathan Mui, winner of the 2007 Competition was recently judged joint winner of the Queensland Concerto Competition in Brisbane. He enjoyed performing with his Caldersmith violin and is looking forward to playing it when he returns in February for the fee-paying recital tour that is part of his prize.
Jonathan’s recital dates are: Wednesday 20 February (7 pm) in Sydney at The Manors of Mosman; Saturday 23 February (2 pm) at Nambucca Heads and Sunday 24 February (2 pm) at Kendall School of Arts. He will be accompanied on each occasion by Jeanell Carrigan.
2008. Competition dates are: Sunday 27 July (from 10 am) – Competition semi-final in Sydney (venue to be confirmed); Saturday 30 August (from 10 am) Competition FINAL at Kendall School of Arts; Sunday 31 August (2 pm) Celebration Concert with 2008 winner’s performance at Kendall School of Arts.

The JB Seed - Indigenous Recording - Closing 16 March
A grant to provide the opportunity for an Indigenous musical performer or act in any genre, with original material, to record a 5 track EP. The grant winner will collaborate with Buchman (AKA Tony Buchen) to produce, arrange, record, mix and master their music in his studio in Sydney. The JB Seed will provide and arrange transport, accommodation, and living expenses whilst recording, and provide a budget for artwork and to manufacture 1,000 copies of the EP. Applicants need to provide a sample of their music on CD, a brief biography of the performers involved and a vision of what they hope to achieve by recording this EP. The JB Seed - Professional & Skills Development - Closing 16 March
A grant is open to musicians and musical technicians who wish to enhance their skill base or career choices by undertaking further study, residencies, mentoring relationships, seminars, or conferences with recognised practitioner/s of excellence. Applicants must include an abridged relevant biography, their vision of the benefits of their project, an abridged biography of the proposed practitioner and confirmation that the practitioner is willing and able to be involved in the project. The JB Seed - Social Activism Through the Arts - Closing 16 March
This program embraces all art forms and is open to any projects or initiatives that serve to educate and/or create debate and awareness on current, socially relevant issues. Applicants will be required to explain their project idea, who will be involved and what they want to achieve, as well as how their art form (whether music, film, painting, sculpture, performance, etc) will be used in the project. A brief plan for how the project will be marketed is also required.

The JB Seed - Management Workshop Initiative - Closing 16 March
This workshop offers practical strategies for managing a band or performer in the establishment phase of their career. The workshop will bring together a group of significant professionals in the music industry, including managers, distributors, radio promoters, radio representatives, publicists, lawyers, grant writers, publishers, and artists to share their knowledge and offer strategic advice on ways to enhance performers' opportunities in the music industry. The JB Seed - The Jacqui McCoy (Geia) Trust - Closing 16 March
This trust seeks to honour the memory of the tireless work of the late Jacqui McCoy (Geia), who devoted much of her life to assisting disadvantaged artists from all backgrounds, but particularly Indigenous Australian artists. Every application submitted to The JB Seed in 2008 will automatically be eligible to be awarded funds from The Jacqui McCoy trust. The recipient of funds from this trust will be selected at the committee’s discretion, from within the four JB Seed category applicants. CASP provides small grants to arts and community organisations, Regional Arts Boards and local arts councils in regional NSW for short term, locally initiated projects. The aims of the program are:
to assist locally determined cultural activities;
to increase opportunities for regionally based groups to access a diverse range of arts programs;
to enable communities to explore and express their cultural identities;
to encourage communities to work together to develop and participate in cultural experiences;

Fto Young Filmmakers Fund - Round 23 - Deadline April 14 - Regional Nsw & Western Sydney Filmmakers Only The Young Filmmakers Fund supports new and emerging filmmakers in NSW (18-35 years old) and provides a unique opportunity for young talent to break into the highly competitive film and television industry. There are two funding rounds per year with up to four projects selected in each round. Successful applicants receive grants of up to $30,000 for production and/or post-production. Contemporary Music touring - call for funding applications - Applications are now being sought for music touring from 1 July 2008 through the Australian Government’s Contemporary Music Touring Program. Announcing Community Partnerships grant opportunities for 2008... Community Partnerships is pleased to announce the launch of its re-vamped project categories for next year:
- Project and professional development (category B) - $0 to $20,000; and
- Projects with public outcomes (category C) - $20,000 to $35,000
Applicants will now have more opportunities to apply for funding through these categories, with applications accepted anytime from 1 February to 1 September 2008. There will be four funding rounds, the first round open from the 1 Feb to 3 March 2008 followed by three other rounds throughout the year. Aboriginal Heritage Projects - Ongoing - Aboriginal Heritage Projects provide grants of up to $75,000 to conserve Aboriginal heritage and encourage greater understanding of Aboriginal culture. The program assists in the conservation of culturally significant Aboriginal sites, documents community events and contributes to Aboriginal tourism. The aim is to sustain long-term heritage benefits and create greater knowledge of Aboriginal traditions throughout the greater community. Nambucca Valley Arts Council Presents: JONATHON MUI - Saturday 23rd of February at 2pm WINNER OF THE KENDALL NATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION 2007. He will be joined by pianist Jeanell Carrigan and will play his prize Caldersmith concert violin in a recital which includes works of Kriesler, Elgar, Beethoven, Chopin, Dvorak and Ravel.
Jonathon, at 15, has performed in masterclasses at the Shanghai Conservatorium of Music, been the recipient of a scholarship to the seven-week Meadowmount Summer School of Music in the USA with Professor Charles Avsharian and has performed in China with both the Guangxi Symphony
Orchestra and the Nanning Conservatorium of Music Orchestra.

The music matches the words in poetry about Love, Peace and Equality; themes familiar to SONiA's writing since the creation of ‘disappear fear’. “t a n g o” has been classified as WORLD and Folk-Pop. Latin and Middle Eastern rhythms and instrumentation along with lush string arrangements and harmonies are featured. SONiA and disappear fear launched the CD with a 50 city tour in the USA and Canada before heading to Australia for their current tour which started at Woodford Folk Festival.

The weekend course run by local filmmaker Simon Portus will look at how to apply for money to get your film made. Simon has been successful in getting funding from both the NSW Film and Television Office and the Australian Film Comission. The course will look at scripts, synopsis', budgeting, directors statements, producers statements, marketing overviews and schedules. This course is specifically aimed at helping applicants for the next round of the Young Fimmakers Fund which is only open to Regional NSW and Western Sydney applications.
