Seeking Volunteers - My Coffs Coast" is a Community Quest
teaming with Palms Shopping Centre, seeking personal ideas about
"what does Coffs Coast mean to you?". A communique
has been sent to schools and the public via the media, with
wonderful entries coming in. Three selections will be turned
into huge oil paintings. The paintings
will be created within Palms Shopping over a period of three
months, commencing September 7th. During this time, we would
like to include an easel set up where parents walking past,
with their children, can have their kids paint on canvases just
for them. This is so that the kids can feel they are a special
part of the Community Quest. Palms Shopping will display the
canvases and then we hope for the canvases to be bought by businesses
or individuals, with the money sent to a charity of their choice.
We need volounteers to help with marshalling the kids and
maintaining parents' involvement while painting. The sessions
would be in 2 hour blocks. |

Coffs
Coast Culture - On Saturday 22 August Coffs Harbour City Council,
in conjunction with Southern Cross University, will be holding
a community forum on arts and cultural development, at the Cavanbah
Centre, Harbour Drive, Coffs Harbour, between 2 and 5pm.
The

contribute to Council's development of quality arts and cultural
experiences for residents and visitors throughout the local
area.
Participants are invited to come along and have their say on
the best way forward to enhance arts and cultural development
in all its forms and to establish broader strategies for the
visual arts, performing arts and museums practice.
The outcomes of the consultation will be fed into Council's
Strategic Planning process.
It is hoped that the participants will share ideas, issues and
innovative approaches to help build Coffs Harbour's reputation
as a sustainable cultural hub.
Register your intention to come along and be refreshed by an
afternoon exploring ways to progress the creative industries,
arts and cultural activity in the Coffs Harbour local government
area.

New
music scholarship - New
support for musical development on the mid-north coast has arrived
in the form of a $1,000 cash scholarship offered jointly by
James Hannah and Sinfonia Mid-North Coast. James Hannah is the
honorary conductor of Sinfonia, the region's principal community
symphony orchestra.
Sinfonia's management board is pleased that in this year, which
marks 10 years for Sinfonia of performing in the region, the
organisation is now able to offer support for individual musical
development in this way.
"We have been working on arrangements for a scholarship
since late last year, and were delighted when James Hannah offered
to sponsor it," said Sinfonia's vice-president, Cheryl
Meyer.
The scholarship is offered to a musician of any age with a minimum
Grade 4 playing proficiency on an orchestral instrument. This
includes stringed, woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments.
The applicants must also reside on the mid-north coast at the
time of applying.
The scholarship may be used for any purpose which helps further
the winner's musical education or ability, such as towards the
purchase of an instrument, music, or lessons, or even travel
to lessons or overseas for musical study.
"We hope the scholarship will help a local musician, but
also the orchestra, as the winner commits to rehearsing and
performing with Sinfonia for a year," Cheryl Meyer explained.
The orchestra is always looking for new players to strengthen
its ranks of dedicated amateurs aged from teens to seniors.
"Playing in Sinfonia is a wonderful musical education in
itself," Ms. Meyer adds, who is also a member of the orchestra's
cello section. "And we have a lot of fun."
Anyone wishing to obtain information and an application form
for the James Hannah and Sinfonia Music Scholarship can email
the secretary, Dennis Marriott on robin189@bigpond.net.au for
a brochure, or ring 6553-9474. Applications must be in by
30 September, and the winner will be announced at Sinfonia's
last concert of the year in December. |

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes - 27-28 August -
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is adapted from Eleanor
Coerr's moving classic based on a true story. Sadako Sasaki
is an ordinary feisty 12-year-old who dreams of one day becoming
Japan's greatest ever runner. Then suddenly she is struck down
by a terrible illness. On an astonishing over-sized origami
set, this production literally unfolds before your very eyes.
Wendy Matthews: Up Close and Intimate - 30 August - Wendy
Matthew has a reputation as an artist par excellence with a
sublime, expressive voice that never fails to move those who
hear it. Both acoustically and physically, Wendy Matthews moves
with an enviable minimalism.

Lulo Reinhardt's Latin Swing Project and his 2009 Australian
Tour. Bellingen Memorial Hall on September 4th
As befits a relative of the legendary
string bender, Django Reinhardt, Lulo Reinhardt is well grounded
in gypsy swing but rather than slavishly imitate his grand-uncle,
this master guitarist uses 'manouche' to explore Latin music,
combining gypsy jazz with elements of American jazz, flamenco,
tango and bossa nova. It is worth noting his famous uncle Also
changed and developed his styles many times.
Lulo Reinhardt comes to Australia directly from Europe with
an international 6 piece band featuring a German rhythm section
and Australian violinist, Daniel Weitlinger from Sydney band
and ARIA award winners, Monsieur Camembert. Bellingen is fortunate
enough to be able to host a date in Lulo Reinhardt's Tour. Lulo
will perform at the official launch for the 2009 Bellingen Global
Carnival. All enquiries please ring Bryony on 0266 553024 |
