v Building Blox Workshops and Forums for Artists and Craftsworkers professional Development
In 2009 the BuildingBlox Project presents a program of forums and workshops being held across the Mid North Coast. These are aimed at improving economic opportunities for visual artists and craftspeople by developing professional practice and by getting artworks into the marketplace. The BuildingBlox program offers extensive information and support for artists in the areas of Audience & Marketing, Industry & Business and Partnership & Network Development. Forums and workshops will include presentations by artists, craftspeople and industry specialists and participants will have the opportunity of exchanging ideas, getting practical advice and experience from 'hands on' workshop activities and tapping into the growing vibrancy of creative practice on the Mid North Coast.

v Mid North Coast Authors is a co-operative that markets and promotes the books of authors who live on the mid-north coast of NSW.
The four authors who comprise the group are:

v Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery (DNAAG) is a new Gallery showcasing the works of local indigenous artists of the Dunghutti region. On show at the Gallery is a wide collection of works including paintings, silk scarves, shoes, jewellery, didgeridoo's, turtle shells by establish and emerging Aboriginal Artists such as Milton Budge, John Kelly, Gus Kelly, Larry Morris, Esther Quinlin, Peggy Quinlan, Sonny Bell to name a few.

v ABC Artpost - Putting Regional Artists On The Digital Map - Artpost, an interactive website and short video series for TV broadcast, which showcases artists working in regional and remote parts of the country, has recently been launched. The site provides the tools for students, teachers, art lovers and artists to create short videos about who they are and their work, for inclusion on an interactive digital map of Australia. ABC is seeding the map by making 25 videos to kick off the initiative - the intention being that 25 videos will become 50, 50 will become 500 and so on until the digital map is coloured in with pockets of creative communities.www.abc.net.au/artpost

The Selection Panel will be looking for a campaign image and slogan that:
· attracts the attention of young people and encourages them to get involved in ArtStart 2009
· reflects the inclusive nature of ArtStart and the diversity of young people that are involved
· can be adapted and reproduced for a variety of printed and online marketing purposes.
The work must be your own original artwork. You may already have an image that you would like to submit or you may create a new work.

v Public Art Commission Opportunity, Belconnen Arts Centre Landmark Public Artwork
Expressions of Interest are invited from artists to design, fabricate and install a LANDMARK public artwork to be sited on Emu Bank opposite the junction of Benjamin Way near the entrance of the new Belconnen Arts Centre. The Arts Centre is a significant new community arts facility currently under construction on the Lake Ginninderra Foreshore. Creating a public artwork is an unrivalled opportunity to explore the nexus of place and social identity. The Belconnen Arts Centre public artwork is expected to express themes relevant to the Belconnen community and it is intended to be a way finding element in a key public space linking the Belconnen Town Centre with the Belconnen Art Centre and the Lake Ginninderra foreshore promenade.

Devolved to Express Media by the Literature Board of the Australia Council, Write in Your Face supports emerging forms of writing practice by young writers, or organisations working with young writers. They're inviting proposals from people who are using language in innovative ways. This may involve writing for zines, e-zines, comics, multimedia, multi-artforms or cross-media works, websites, live performances and spoken word. v Connections Residencies - Amount: Up to $30,000 - Close: 15 April 2009
A new initiative of the Australia Council supporting artists to initiate residencies with non-arts businesses and industries. Artists who have existing relationships with business and industry partners, but lack resources to carry out effective residency projects, are particularly encouraged to apply. Participating non-arts organisations must also bring significant cash or in-kind resources to the project, and demonstrate their capacity to provide access to staff, equipment or other facilities necessary to make the residency a success. v Call For Entries - Forbo Silk Cut Award - Entries close 19 June 2009 - Those with an artistic bent will be pleased to know that entry is now open to the prestigious 2009 Silk Cut Award for linocut prints. Prizes offered by the Silk Cut Foundation, set up by Duroloid and Forbo Flooring Systems, include the chance to be hung in the National Gallery of Australia, travel and cash.
This year will mark the 10th Award, designed to encourage the making and appreciation of linocut prints. The existence of the award has led to many visual artists working in the medium and producing some extraordinary and imaginative work from the eco-friendly linoleum, Silk Cut.
One of the most important printmaking awards in Australia, the Silk Cut Award is the only national print award to have a category dedicated to students, providing print artists of all ages with the opportunity for their work to be recognised on a national stage.
An attractive prize pool includes a choice of a trip to Amsterdam worth $7000 including return air fare, 10 days accommodation and $1000 spending money or a monetary prize of $8000 for the winning open section entrant.
The student section will see four successful entrants win a Silk Cut Award trophy and certificate while the overall first place prize winner receives a $2500 cash prize for their school's art department.
Entries close 19 June 2009 and winners will be announced on 3 September at the Silk Cut Award presentation evening, the first night of public display.

v The 2009 Osmosis photography, art and poetry competition - closes on Friday 31 July, 2009. - has officially opened and this year the theme encourages an exploration of water and its life-giving qualities.
The competition, now in its seventh year, is open to Hastings residents of all ages and is funded by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council as part of its program of educating the broader community about water conservation and environmental sustainability.
Photographers, writers and artists are encouraged to submit work that explores the mystical, magical, playful and spiritual elements of water.
Those who participate have the chance of winning part of the $1600 in prize money, having their work exhibited during Water Week in October as well as published in the 2010 Osmosis calendar.
This year the competition is free with a maximum of three entries per person. The competition closes on Friday 31 July, 2009.
Entry forms are available at all Port Macquarie Hastings Council offices and libraries.
All money raised from the sale of the Osmosis calendar is donated to WaterAid Australia for clean water projects in developing countries.
The Osmosis event is proudly supported and acknowledged by the United Nations.

v The 2009 Manning Art Prize - Entries close on the 14th August 2009 - The Friends of the Manning Regional Art Gallery Inc. proudly announce that entries are now open for the 2009 Manning Art Prize, organised in partnership with the Manning Regional Art Gallery, City of Greater Taree. Entries close on the 14th August 2009 and the judge for this year's Art Prize will be Reg Richardson AM, Director of The Art Gallery of NSW Foundation, former Deputy Chair of the Museum of Contemporary Art and prominent art collector.
Total prize money is $15 000 across two categories of entries, works in 2D and works in 3D. The overall winner (acquisitive) of the 2009 Manning Art Prize attracts the major prize of $10 000. There is no set theme for the 2009 Manning Art Prize.

v Sculpture in the Gaol - All applications are to be submitted by July 3rd- This is a call to the region's community of sculptors to bring their works to one of the state's most spectacular locations.
"Trial Bay Gaol is the ideal venue for a sculpture exhibition because it provides the artist with so many possibilities" ,says event co-ordinator Tim Amson, who worked on both the Biennale of Sydney and the Sydney Festival exhibitions held in the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens.
Sculpture in the Gaol aims to be the first of an annual exhibition and competition showcasing Australian sculpture inside the Trial Bay gaol itself.

v The Youth Participation Grants Program Applications close on the 24th of April. - gives young people the power and resources to develop and implement community activities in their local area. A selection panel will award grants to young people who can demonstrate that: their project benefits the community in some way the idea for the project has come from young people the application has been created by young people their project will increase community interaction.
If you are aged between 12 and 25 years, and living in NSW, you can apply for a youth participation grant. Any type of project that benefits the community in some way, is realisticly achieved is legal and safe and is run by young people. v Aboriginal Heritage Projects - Ongoing - Aboriginal Heritage Projects provide grants of up to $75,000 to conserve Aboriginal heritage and encourage greater understanding of Aboriginal culture. The program assists in the conservation of culturally significant Aboriginal sites, documents community events and contributes to Aboriginal tourism. The aim is to sustain long-term heritage benefits and create greater knowledge of Aboriginal traditions throughout the greater community. v Australia Council For The Arts: Creative Communities Partnerships Initiative - The Creative Communities Partnership Initiative supports major community arts and cultural development projects of excellence. Creative Communities Partnerships support opportunities for Australians to participate in meaningful arts and cultural activities in the places where they live, encouraging innovation and enhancing community wellbeing. Proposals may include a range of diverse but related activities and could be for a period of up to three years for total amounts between $50,000 and $600,000. v Community Heritage Grants - Applications close: 5 June 2009 - The National Library is calling for applications for the 2009 Community Heritage Grants. Grants of up to $15 000 are available to community groups around the country to help preserve and manage locally held, nationally significant cultural heritage collections for future generations. Community organisations such as historical societies, museums, public libraries, archives, Indigenous and migrant community groups which provide public access to their cultural heritage collections are eligible to apply. A wide range of projects may qualify for grants, including: significance assessments; preservation needs assessments; conservation and preservation activities and collection management training.

v JB Seed Arts Grants - The JB Seed aims to help Australian artists from any background, creating art and music across any genre, to establish themselves as self-sustained, professional artists. Over the past five years, with the help of a bunch of like minded music loving folk they've been extremely proud to hand out over $400,000 to incredibly talented, motivated and original artists who could do with some financial support. It’s been an honour to give these people a helping hand. This year we have announced two brand new categories that will join two mainstays of the JB Seed.

v Money for Volunteer Museums – VIM Grants Opening Soon! The 2009 Volunteer Initiated Museum (VIM) Grant Program will soon be open for applications. Keep an eye on Alert! in mid-February for an invitation to submit applications for the following grants: -Leg Ups – Skill Development Grants (matched funding up to $500) - VIM Small Grants (funding up to $1,500) - VIM Skills Initiatives Grants (funding up to $5,000)

v Small Communities Awareness Fund - Ongoing - Purpose of the Program - The NSW Government announced the Building the Country funding package in November 2008.
The Small Communities Awareness Fund is $450,000 over five years to help small communities in rural and remote NSW to supplement or establish an internet website promoting their town and tourism attractions. Funding is for communities with less than 10 000 people.
Grants will be provided to community based organisations involved in local community promotion that demonstrate a clear community benefit in their application. Funds of $5,000 are available per community for eligible projects that demonstrate community inkind contributions and who have not received similar funding in the past. The funding application process is open all year round.

Local M.A.D.E is bringing to the community two stages in the one arena so that there will be continuous entertainment for this six hour event. Our local dancing talent will also be performing at the event.

v 2009 Coffs Harbour Lillipilli Art & Craft Exhibition - Friday evening, April 17 - Sunday, April 26
Well Over 400 entries have been received for this year's Coffs Harbour Lillipilli Art & Craft Exhibition.
The Lillipilli, the biggest exhibition of its type for the year on the Eastern Seaboard, will officially open at 7.30pm at the Norm Jordan Pavilion in Coffs Harbour Showgrounds on Friday evening, April 17, and will run daily throughout the school holidays between 10am and 4pm until Sunday, April 26.
Each Lillipilli is new, novel and unique - all art works must have been completed since last year's exhibition.
There will be 24 categories of arts and crafts on display, from all forms of paintings, drawings and miniatures through to fibrecraft, calligraphy, ceramics, photography, woodworks and sculptures.
An extensive Youth Section will also display works of our up and coming young artists, so a budding young genius may yet debut in this section.
An entry fee of $5 per person applies throughout the exhibition, while entry to opening night is $10.
Judging will have been completed before the exhibition opens, but all visitors will have an opportunity to vote in the People's Choice Award.
This is the 24th consecutive year that the Woolgoolga Art Group - a local volunteer group of artists and art lovers - has organised and run this extraordinary exhibition.

v Building Blox Workshops and Forums for Artists and Craftsworkers professional Development
In 2009 the BuildingBlox Project presents a program of forums and workshops being held across the Mid North Coast. These are aimed at improving economic opportunities for visual artists and craftspeople by developing professional practice and by getting artworks into the marketplace. The BuildingBlox program offers extensive information and support for artists in the areas of Audience & Marketing, Industry & Business and Partnership & Network Development. Forums and workshops will include presentations by artists, craftspeople and industry specialists and participants will have the opportunity of exchanging ideas, getting practical advice and experience from 'hands on' workshop activities and tapping into the growing vibrancy of creative practice on the Mid North Coast.

v FREE Community Workshops!!! - 2009 Do you need help developing projects and writing funding submissions??
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is conducting a series of workshops to assist Non-For-Profit organisations with the focus on project development and submission writing. New and emerging groups are also encouraged to attend. The aim of the workshops is to increase the quality of project applications that are submitted through the local grants schemes.
These workshops are one day sessions and will be FREE to community groups. Please identify the session that best suites you. Places are limited, so please RSVP to Shona Russell on 65818 055 or shona.russell@pmhc.nsw.gov.au.

13 March - 11 April 2009 Women of the World - exhibition - This exhibition will be held for the first time in 2009 in celebration of International Women's Day.
Included in the exhibition are entries from Sweden, Serbia, Columbia, Belgium, Switzerland, Iran, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Philippines, Luxembourg, Argentina, China, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Czech Republic and Australia.
The Bunker will also exhibit works from the children of the Ural Caricature Club "Cranberry" of Ozersk, Russia.
