Artist of the Month is :
Jane Hosking - Sculptor

Jane Hosking

I've had a lifelong love of nature and art. Many things interest me as an artist from the aesthetics of colour, unusual forms and textures to the issue of making a comment through my work. I like to produce works that can be humourous and fun but I also want to make a statement about issues such as the effect of humankind on nature. A continuing inspiration in my work is the concept of artifacts; objects that have existed for years and have been affected by weather, the environment and time. I am fascinated with the serendipitous colours, patinas and textures that eventuate through these elements.

Major influences of my work include the reuse of materials that have already had a life. While it is exciting to produce an artwork from new materials, sometimes a reused material can give an artwork an extra dimension, often due to the patinas and wear.

I have recently delved into the world of theatre props and am keen to explore this further. I would like the challenge of making something really unusual that someone else wants to see come to reality.

I hold a BA in Visual Art from Newcastle University and a Master of Letters in Visual Art from UNE. Exhibited in many group exhibitions in NSW and was a finalist in Sculpture by the Sea 2004, the Waterhouse Natural History Prize 2004 and the Thursday Plantation Sculpture Show 2006. Currently Assistant Director of Manning Regional Art Gallery at Taree.
