Coffs Harbour Library is paging all young book and photography lovers to enter its
Love2Read photo competition.

The library’s children and youth co-ordinator Judy Atkinson says that the entry
requirements are simple.

“Just take a photograph inspired by the theme love to read. It could include a book or be your favourite place to read – it’s up to you!

“Be creative, bold and inspired – you don’t even have to be a library member to
enter, just between the ages of twelve and eighteen and live or study in Coffs
Harbour,” Atkinson said.

Entries will be judged by local photographer Bruce Thomas, there are great prizes to be won and the photos will be displayed in the library.

All photographs must be digital and the original work of the entrant. Prizes will
be awarded at Coffs Harbour Library at 4.30 pm on Thursday 23 August 2013.

Entries close Saturday, 18 May and should be submitted by email (or on disc or
thumb drive to Coffs Harbour, Toormina or Woolgoolga Libraries) with a signed
application form. For further information, see http://libraries.coffsharbour.nsw.gov.au/youngpeople/teens/Pages/YouthWeek.aspx , contact Judy on 6648 4900 or email coffs.library@chcc.nsw.gov.au

No news is good news as the Federal Budget locks in funding for Creative Australia

The arts may be the only sector happy after the Federal Budget, which slashed most sectors but followed through on the promises in the Government’s long-awaited national cultural policy. Funding for Creative Australia – has finally materialised delivering the healthy increases in base funding announced earlier this year by former Arts Minister Simon Crean.

It was a quiet budget for the arts with no new announcements. Arts Minister Tony Burke was chiefly concerned with funding announcements in his Environment portfolio, and no budget media release for the arts was sent out

The Australia Council receives ongoing extra funding of approximately $25 million a year from this year on, and the various components of the Creative Australia policy are all budgeted for, such as the extra funding for performing arts companies via the ‘excellence pool’, top-ups for six capital city performing arts companies, the “Creative Young Stars” grants for local MPs in their communities, and the funding of ArtStart for a further four years.

National arts training organisations, such as the Australian Ballet School, the Australian Youth Orchestra and the National Institute of Circus Arts, have had the extra funding previously announced through Creative Australia budgeted here. This equates to $20.9 million over the forward estimates.

The indigenous visual arts have also received extra funding. The budget provides an additional $11.3 million over four years from 2013-14 ‘to continue the 2009-10 Closing the Gap component of the Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) program.’

Australia Council Chairman Rupert Myer told artsHub while he had been confident Creative Australia had been funded in the forward estimates it was ‘very nice to see it in black and white’. more

“The Aussie Mailbox”

For some time a small group of people , interested in sculpture, has gathered to discuss ways of introducing sculpture into the Macleay Valley environment.

Inspired by “Sculpture in the Gaol” at Trial Bay, “Sculpture by the Sea” coastal walk in Sydney, displayed from Bondi to Tamarama Beach, and other communities which have installed public sculpture in their towns to enhance their environment and promote local artists, the group has decided to hold a competition.

The competition, open to all artists, has the theme “The Aussie Mailbox”. Many Aussie roads have imaginative mailboxes on their roadsides often grouped together to form interesting collections of shapes and styles.

Conditions of Entry

All entries need to be designed and constructed from durable materials, suitable for outside installation, constructed for longevity and displaying sound craftsmanship with no sharp or protruding objects or edges.

Sculptures must come ready for installation e.g. with post or stand.

The committee reserves the right to use photos of any sculptures entered for publicity, to reject any entry not meeting the conditions or any entry not considered durable enough for long term installation. Entries must be able to be moved by a minimum of two people.

Winning entries will be installed within the Shire at sites to be approved by Kempsey Shire Council. These may include outside West Kempsey Post Office, in the courtyard of the Kempsey Shire Library or other sites to be negotiated by the committee. There is no prize money attached to this competition.

All artists will remain the owners of their works but winning works will be on permanent loan to the sculpture committee until the winning displayed works are de-commissioned.

A fee of $20 for each entry is to be paid to Macleay Valley Arts Council.

Further information from Steve MacDonald at mooneba@hotmail.com

Friday, May 31…Entry closing date.
Deliver completed entry form to West Kempsey Post Office.

Saturday, June 15 …Delivery
of Aussie Mail Box sculpture to the Macleay Valley Arts Council’s Oddfellows
Hall, 22 Kemp Street, West Kempsey from 9am to noon.

Friday, July 26…Opening of installation. All artists will be invited to the opening.

Artists, performers, filmmakers and musicians need to have a handle on their tax situation, not just to comply with regulations but also to take advantage of the deductions and concession available to those who work in the arts. This intensive and entertaining workshop day explains how, and in an easy to understand way.

Freelancing expert Monica Davidson will explore practical answers for the technical questions relating to GST, PAYG, BAS, allowable deductions and the special provisions relating to creative industries to ensure you have an appropriate tax strategy for your creative enterprise.
